Mark Kent

Senior Minister

Mark was born in Spokane, WA, but did not live in Spokane until adulthood; most of his childhood was spent in the Seattle area. In 9th grade, his family moved to Moses Lake in central Washington. Two years later, on a Sunday evening in 1971, Mark accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior and was baptized into Christ for the forgiveness of his sins. Following his graduation from high school he eventually made his way to Dallas, TX, where he attended and graduated from the Preston Road School of Preaching.

Following a career that took him from Texas to all around the Northwest, Mark was offered (and accepted) a position as the principal and a teacher for Sunrise Christian Academy, a ministry of Sunrise Church of Christ. In 2001, Mark was offered the position of Senior Minister for Sunrise Church, which he accepted and for which he was ordained in May 2001.

Mark has been married to his wife, Karen, since 1983 and is the proud father of three daughters: Erin, Stacee, and Justine. In addition to his passion for preaching, teaching, and serving our Lord, he is passionate about his family, friends, and dogs. He especially loves being a new “grandpa.” He says of his life, “I may never be wealthy by the world’s standards, but I am a rich man beyond measure because of the blessings that our Heavenly Father has bestowed upon me.”

Troy Burns

Youth Minister

Troy was born in Fort Lewis, WA, starting his life as an “Army Brat” and splitting time between western and eastern Washington as a young child. For more than 30 years now, he has called Spokane, WA “home.”

He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Whitworth College, and later pursued a ministry education through Northwest College of Bible, as well as graduate work in Theological Studies at Cincinnati Bible Seminary. Troy first joined the Sunrise staff as a part-time Youth Leader in 1998. He moved to a “nearly full-time” status in 2000 and was ordained as a Youth Minister. In September, 2004, he officially became a full-time staff member in his continuing role of overseeing the youth ministry while also serving as Assistant Principal for Sunrise Christian Academy.

Troy has been happily married to his wife, Kelly, since 1992, and they have three amazing children: Nolan, Kaelynn, and Addison. In addition to his ministry at the church and school, Troy is passionate about leading and spending time with his family, striving with God’s help to become the best husband and father he can be.

In whatever free time he can find, Troy loves to run; he completed his second marathon in the spring of 2009.

Dennis Queen

Elder

Dennis was born and raised in Omaha, NE, where he met and married his lovely wife, Betsy, in 1978. They have three exceptional children: Amanda (Mandy), an RN at the Portland Clinic in Oregon; James (Jamie), a software developer for the State of Montana in Helena; and Alex (just Alex), who teaches elementary school in Mutsu City, Japan. Dennis has been blessed with a daughter-in-law (Jamie’s wife, Crystal) and two grandchildren (Kyleigh and Caleb).

Shortly out of high school, Dennis enlisted in the Air Force with hopes of serving at the local Offutt Air Force Base; naturally, he was posted in White Sands, NM, then Okinawa, Japan. Returning a veteran, Dennis was able to complete his Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting and purchase his first home with his new bride.

Dennis and his family attended Florence Christian Church in Omaha, where he served as elder for ten years prior to relocating to Spokane in 1993. Upon arriving in Spokane, Dennis became heavily involved in God’s work at Sunrise; within a couple of years, he was again serving the congregation as an elder and treasurer. Dennis is currently employed by SCAFCO Grain Systems Company as Sales Manager.

Dennis’ interests include doting over his two wonderful grandchildren and making his wife of 30+ years happy.

Paul Steele

Elder

Paul Steele was born in Long Beach, CA, in 1960. In 1969 his family moved to a small town in upstate New York called Youngstown where he was raised. Paul’s family moved again in 1976, and he has called Spokane home for the last 33 years.

Paul met his wife Lori while they were both employed at McDonalds, where she caught his eye and invited him to go to church with her on Sunday to North Central Church of Christ. That date proved to be the beginning of Paul’s journey into a Christ filled life and a soul mate for life. Paul and Lori have been happily married for 30 years and have two grown children, Carmen and Wesley.

Paul has worked in the Foodservice industry for 25 years and is currently a Sales Manager for Sysco Foodservice of Spokane. Paul has been an Elder at Sunrise Church of Christ since April of 1997, where he serves in the Capacity of Secretary, is the Elder in charge of Facilities and Maintenance as well as leading in Praise and Worship.

Paul enjoys history, numerous sports, ultra-light backpacking, tinkering on his cars, and boating with his family.

Bob Wrubleski

Elder

Bob Wrubleski was born and raised in Spokane. He graduated from Gonzaga University with a degree in Business and was commissioned through the ROTC program into the US Army. He served over 26 years with the Department of the Army as an officer and civilian. Most notable was being assigned to Army Headquarters at the Pentagon as a Senior Research Analyst and Readiness Officer. This assignment was also notable in that Bob accepted Jesus and was immersed into Christ at First Christian Church in Glen Burnie, MD in 1992.

He served as a deacon, played on the praise team, and taught the 5th and 6th grade Sunday School class. The Army relocated him to the Pacific Northwest in 1996 to serve in Seattle and at Fort Lewis. Bob retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2002 and continued to work at Fort Lewis. During this time, he was a member of the Crown Hill and Glen Acres churches. He was ordained as an elder at the Glen Acres church in 2002.

Bob returned to Spokane in 2005 and now serves as the Principal of Sunrise Christian Academy and was ordained as an elder by Sunrise in 2006. He and his wife Laurie were married in Spokane in 1980 and have three grown children and two grandchildren.

Jerry Glover

Deacon

Jerry’s life journey began when his mother visited family in Fresno, CA. He was born at St. Agnes Hospital on September 16, 1944, weighing in at just over 10 lbs. Shortly after his birth, Jerry’s family returned to Spokane, where he grew up and later served in the National Guard through high school. Serving others was evident in Jerry from a young age. Following his graduation from Lewis & Clark High School, he enlisted in the United States Army to “see the world,” and that is certainly what he did. A two-year tour in Vietnam left him with long lasting effects, but his choice to serve our country was well worth it. He received an Honorable Discharge after seven years of service, achieving the rank of Sergeant (E-5).

On July 4, 1969, Jerry married the love of his life, Tina, his best friend and true teammate in life. Jerry and Tina were blessed with three special children: J.J., Christine, and Dion, as well as one surrogate son, Tony. Three grandchildren were also added to their blessings: Jerry III, Jahvyn, and Lillie Bell.

All Christians belong to the family of God through the blood of the Lamb, and that’s why fellow members of Sunrise Church of Christ call him “Uncle Jerry.” He felt the Lord lead him to Sunrise in May 1990, and he soon enjoyed the adventure of teaching Sunday School and Children’s Church for several years. While he does not believe he needs a title to serve God, Jerry was ordained as the Deacon of Benevolence in 1993. What an honor and opportunity he has had to share Jesus Christ with others!

Serving God and sharing life with his wife (“Punkin”) are the highlights of Jerry’s life.
